In the article, "Alaskans’ Cost of Staying Warm: A Thick Coat of Dirty Air", Kirk Johnson explains how Alaska had terrible air pollution during winter due to people trying to stay warm by the fireplace in their homes. It was recording to have a high concentration of pollution in the area. Some residents even resulted to finding higher grounds. The E.P.A resulted in putting a Clean Air act about which resulted in having to take away peoples' wooden stoves. People have been fighting against them as we speak.
I believe this to be a serious environmental problem because air pollution can have negative side affects on humans and the environment around us. After reading this article, i was kind of disappointed to know that people were being greedy, and fighting the E.P.A. because they are trying to help the community. Air pollution is never a good thing, it can make humans have a hard time breathing, and can even cause higher temperatures. This is why i believe this to be a serious problem. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/25/us/alaskans-cost-of-staying-warm-a-thick-coat-of-dirty-air.html?_r=0

In the article, "An Ancient Tsunami That Ended a Civilization Gets Another Look", Henry Fountain discusses how researchers are determining what caused an ancient tsunami that hit Santorini during the 17th century. After doing some research they conquered that the tsunami was a result to the caldera collaspe of the volcanic city, Aegean. Sometime later new data aroused showing how the collaspe was cut off from the ocean, and was also isolated, leaving no water inside. It was then later proved that their theory was correct.
I believe this to be some important environmental information because it shows how much climate can cause so much destruction. This article was basically discussing how an eruption of a volcano near an ancient european city, made the city collaspe and cause a tsunami a little after it's own events. How crazy is that? This is why i believe this to be some really important environmental information. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/10/science/santorini-akrotiri-tsunami.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FVolcanoes&action=click&contentCollection=science®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection&_r=0 In the article, " You Say Tomato, These Moths Say Dinner ", Steph Yin writes about this new invasive species that eats tomatoes. It was a tiny moth that originated from Chile and arrived to Europe in the year 2006 by a shipment of invested tomatoes. The farmers, at first, were losing their tomato crops fast and had no solution to stop the moths. After awhile, they soon found pesticides that were harmful to multiple insects and also the environment. This is the only solution farmers found, but still have a lack of tomatoes as of today with this stable, wild crop in Spain.
I believe this to be a serious environmental issue. Invasive species are bad, they ruin the environment, and slow down the food web by disrupting it. This moth made a lot destruction to items around it. They made farmers result in using pesticide that is bad for the environment by polluting the are it is sprayed in. Therefore, I believe that this article discusses a serious environmental issue. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/30/science/you-say-tomato-these-moths-say-dinner.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FInvasive%20Species&action=click&contentCollection=science®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection In the article," Gulf States Get $370M in Oil Spill Funds to Restore Wetlands", The associated press discusses how five gulf states get $370 million to clean up the 2010 oil spill that they have been trying to create new wetlands, and restore fisheries. The states that got the money split up between them are Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. They each all do a part in this project. Louisiana does the engineering and design of two major projects concerning the Mississippi River. All the rest of the states also help clean up the coastline and restore the fisheries and such. People have been encouraged of this.
I believe this to be important environmental information. This shows an excellent example of how people can contribute to the world to keep it in a safe zone. This saves a lot of species, and improves the land. Therefore, i believe this is some good news and serious environmental information. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/11/15/us/ap-us-oil-spill-money-gulf-states.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FOil%20Spills&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection&_r=0 In the article, "After Dinosaur Extinction, Some Insect Recovered More Quickly " , Nicholas ST. Fleur explains how scientists figured out that insects recovered quickly from the asteroid blast that took out the dinosaurs more than others. They conquered this from examining fossilized leaves from after the blast. Those leaves showed that they were being eaten by plant/leaf insects that were still alive after the asteroid blast. Therefore, the scientists came up with the theory that the plant-feeding insects recovered quickly from the asteroid blast that happened 66 million years ago.
I believe this to be serious environmental information. It gives more background information on the evolution of that certain animal. Understanding the evolution of species helps people understand the animal way better. The evolution of an species gives a lot of information of it. Therefore, I believe this to be some serious environmental information. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/08/science/fossilized-leaves-insect-bites-patagonia.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FEndangered%20and%20Extinct%20Species&action=click&contentCollection=science®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection In the article, "Will the Ax Fall on Nigeria's National Parks?", Natalie Ingle discusses how the Nigeria Cross River National Park has been slowly dying away due to the state having recent crashes in oil, currency, and employment. The park was planning on having a tour for the Cross River gorilla, but due to what is happening within the state has flushed those hopes away. As a solution to this problem a 6 mile long superhighway was built, going right through the national park, and a seaport. The state is still arguing whether they should put the superhighway and seaport in.
I believe this to be a serious environmental issues because of the effects of this superhighway being built right through Nigeria's rain forests. This superhighway would cause the land to be end up being barren within the following years after the creation. It will also endanger a few species throughout the rain forests. This will cause Nigeria to have an increase in their list of problems. The possibility of the land going to barren will making harder on them as well, seeing as a lot of effects come with that situation. Therefore, i believe this plan to fix their problems will cause some serious environmental issues. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/04/opinion/will-the-ax-fall-on-nigerias-national-parks.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FEndangered%20and%20Extinct%20Species&action=click&contentCollection=science®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection In the article, "Deforestation and Drought", Jim Robbins discusses how the deforestation in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil led to their major drought last year. Deforestation causes a lot of CO2 to transfer into the atmosphere, making the climate change. This action that was taken in the Amazon could possibly be linked to the other occurring droughts throughout the planet. To solve this problem, people have completely stopped the deforestation and even started to plant more trees in the open area. This has been recorded of slowing improving.
This was shown to be a major environmental issue among the earth. It caused a bunch of droughts by effecting the climate change. It increased the temperatures when all the carbon dioxide was released into the atmosphere. It also increased the chances of global warming. Global warming then ends up creating more problems, which is never a nice thing. Therefore, this is a serious environmental issue. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/11/opinion/sunday/deforestation-and-drought.html?_r=0 In the article, "Tornado Kills at Least 98 in Eastern China", Javier C. Hernandez discusses how a massive tornado swept over Yancheng, China. It was a crazy tornado that showed up out of nowhere in the middle of a storm. It was all of a sudden, the president was trying to save as many as possible, but the casualty numbers were large. At least 98 were killed while 800 other were wounded. This was a very depressing moment in the China population this year.
I believe this is a serious environmental issue considering how many casualties there were. Tornadoes are very dangerous, a lot of land along with the buildings get destroyed, the rivers and lakes get severely polluted, and people get injured. The result from a tornado is very horrible and can ruin our environment. Therefore, I believe that tornadoes are an important environmental issue. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/24/world/asia/tornado-yancheng-china.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FTornadoes&action=click&contentCollection=science®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=collection&_r=0 |
