In the article, "Military Base Near Newburgh Is Made a Superfund Site Over Tainted Water" by Jesse McKinley, He summarizes how a military base's water got polluted by a dangerous chemical in a foam that a fire fighter used.It didn't just pollute the military base, but the whole city's water supply.the chemical that contaminated the water was perfluorooctanesulfornic acid or PFOs for short, which was used mainly for aircraft emergencies seeing as it links to cancer and other medical problems. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has been working since earlier this year to help clear the water of this dangerous chemical, working very hard to get funds. By early May, the water levels were deemed safe to drink, but people still hold worries for it.
I believe that this issue is important because water pollution is a serious topic seeing as people need water to survive, and if most water in the world is polluted, it's gonna result in some causalities. People can only go three days without drinking water, then they will go dehydration and soon die. The people in Newburg had to go about a half a year, having a hard time getting clean water to drink because of this severe chemical reaching the water supply. This issue should've received more attention when it first came about to help save people's lives. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/13/nyregion/military-base-contaminated-water-in-newburgh-ny-state-says.html?_r=0
